Poor whale…

Friday, February 23rd, 2007
Yesterday night, a dead big Finback Whale arrived at the port of Las Palmas stuck to the front bulb of a a ferrys' bow. The Ferry named "Soroya" arrived at the port at this early morning from Tenerife, arriving previously from Cadiz. The cetacen, of an aproximate length of 20m and aproximately 17 tons of weight was already dead when it got hit by the ship. As soon as the whale was detected during the tie up maneuveres the port authorities control group was alerted which also called a divers group to loose the whale from the ship tie it to the dock. At the morning hours then several tecnicians arrived to examine it.

Sardines, R.I.P.

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007
The municipalities of Agüimes and Ingenio, said goodbye to their carnival fests burning the typical huge sardine, made out of wire and paperpaste. Normally during the "sardines' burying" all the participants in this parade dress like widows spending the entire parade crying out loudly. :D This is our typical way of ending the carnival festivities and every city that has a carnival parade has this "burying" and is pretty funny. If you have the oportunity to see this, i recomend it to you. ;)

“Almond Association of Gran Canaria”

Almond Tree FestAround 50 people, between farmers and "finca" propietors have started this initiative in order to promote the culturing of this tree. It's ment to define different varieties of this species, look for one which is better for general production purposes and eventually breed new species. They're also in charge of establishing other ways of marketing this product, since almonds have been a very important procduct in the last decades. The municipalities taking part in this association are mainly Tejeda and Valsequillo, but other colindant areas dedicated to this trees' culturing. That is a good initiative. My "tip of the hat" for these people.

200.000 people

Sunday, February 18th, 2007
Yesterday, was the main carnival parade in Las Palmas which, according to the city's "local police" mobilized about 200.000 people between viewers and participants. Pirates, policemen, prostitues, devils, men dressed as women, politicians, judges, attorneys and a huge et cetera lived up this years parade, which started at 17:00 at the "Castillo de la Luz" in the area known as "el Puerto". 90 floats and decorated cars took part in this picturesque event, makin it come to an end around midnight. The animators on the floats also mentioned how well and 'sweet' the parade was going in contrast to the 'sourness' Tenerife had to be going through due to the controversy created at the Carnival Queen Gala which was directed by dancer Rafael 'Amargo' (which actually means SOUR). :D Well, that unfortunately, will teach us not to bring people in who do not understand our carnival.

Happy Valentines Day!!

Id like to take some time now to tell you a story about this day. People worldwide celebrate st. Valentines day but most don't know even why. What is the story behind all this? I'm not quite sure if it's true, but certainly it'd make some of you smile.

It was the roman empire, around the third century. Claudius was the emperor by that time. Tired of men not wanting to join his "powerful" army of soldiers in order not leave their wives at home alone he decides to abolish marriage, so men would have no reason not to join him. Many were against it and so was a priest named Valentine who decided to keep on marrying couples in secret.

After getting caught during one of his secret ceremonies Valentine was put in prison and sentenced ...
