The Flood

Sunday, January 28th, 2007
The Storm has died down here, but the clouds remain above us. This heavy rainfall we had the past two days has caused several damages due to flooded basements and garages as well as landslides. We are said to be out of danger according to the general directorate of security and emergency, but the alert still remains. At this point it has reached the level of "maximum alert" for the storm has passed by Gran Canaria, but is now over "Lanzarote" and "Fuerteventura". The council of "El Hierro" have said this to be the worst natural disaster in the isles' history. Finally the rain came. Late, but it came...

It’s raining, man…

Saturday, January 27th, 2007
Have you looked out the window today? It started raining yesterday night and as far as i know it did so the entire night through. Now it's 11:50am and it hasn't stopped yet. The general directorate of security and emergency said that the government of the canary islands stated the "orange alert" due to strong rainfall. It might even snow too on high elevatons, at least this is what the national institute of meteorology says. Our "high elevations" are cosidered places above 1000m or 1200m, that basically means the municipalities of Artenara and Tejeda are the ones affected. Be careful if you're hitting the roads, be sure to have enough gas and slow down, at some parts of the highway the water is deep enough to cause "aquaplaning".

Aquasur

You like hanging around the pool all day long getting toasted by the sun? Sick of carrying home 2 buckets of beach sand? Got kids and tired of them brabbling all day long. Maybe this can help. AQUASUR, Gran Canarias' biggest water-slide park is near you. It has 13 attractions and all in all 33 slides, as well as several pools, souvenir-shops and a cafeteria within a surface of 90.000m². Thanks to our splendid weather the park opens daily (except in case of bad weather conditions) from 10:00 to 17:00. Adults pay 22,50€ and kids pay 16,00€ and it's situated on the road to "Palmitos Park" km 3. You can get here also by bus, taking line 45 or line 70, depending where you're coming from. Try it!! You and your kids will enjoy it.

2 million trees

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

The natural reserves use and management plan is now finally approved.

Among many other things to be done in the future, this is the most extraordinary one. In a term of 5 to 15 years, more than 3.000 hectares of different species of trees are going to be reforested. The actual wood grounds are estimated to 14.000. Therefore and after some documents dealing with protected areas are ratified, Gran Canaria will gain a third of its actual wood grounds.

Mainly pine-trees and other species common in thermophilic woods are to be reforested. The areas where it's going to be done first are: - The "Nublo" rural park, extended throughout 8 municipalities: Tejeda, San Nicolás de Tolentino, Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Artenara, San Mateo, Valleseco and Moya. - The "Tamadaba" natural park, concerning
