12 grapes

Sunday, December 31st, 2006
You were probably saying: what?? 12 grapes?? No, i'm not crazy. As a, not only canarian but, entirely spanish tradition we celebrate the countdown to the new year in a very particular way. The last 12 gongs, from normally a tower-clock, of the year when it gets 0:00 are ment to be accompained with a sigle grape with every gong. It normally broadcasted live on TV from the "Puerta del Sol" in Madrid, but since we have it one hour later, it's normally done from a local church with tower-clock. It has its origin 1909 from wine growers who celebrated a good years harvest and is now one of the most deeply rooted habits. You'd be probably tired of hearing this today and i don't want to be the one to miss this chance to get on your nerves too. :D A big hug for everybody, and have a !!! HAPPY NEW YEAR ...

World news: between sadness and enthusiasm

Saturday, December 30th, 2006
Two news had been hitting the television all day. On the one hand: The terrorist act of vasque terrorist group ETA that striked the Barajas airport in Madrid this morning. At 9:00am an artifact, of supposed 200Kg of explosives, detonated at the bottom floor of the T4 terminals parking lot, causing heavy structural damage to nearly every floor above it. A few calls warned from this act several minutes before, making the police evacuate everybody as quick as possible. 2 People still missing. On the other hand: You've probably herad of it and i confirm it again. Last night, former political leader of Irak, Saddam Hussein was executed. The rapidity of this act surprised everyone as the court gave a 30-day term for its execution. Saddam asked not to cover his head during the procedure. No coment on the first one, yet. On the last one: Well, done!! One tyrant less on earth.

“Mojo” is safe

Friday, December 29th, 2006
Almost two months, after implanting new security measures for all european airports on november 6th, consisting one of them, not being able to carry liquids on board, there is already an exception. Our famous "mojo-sauce" is now free of any restriction after representants of manufacturers of our most known sauce appealed to the justice ministry and won the judgement. The canarian "mojo-sauce" can now be taken on board. That is really cool, hahahaha :D   Wouldn't have thought that possible.

Recipe: “Rancho Canario”

Thursday, December 28th, 2006
With this cloudy and slightly cold weather we have today, this meal keeps on going through my mind all morning. It'd be very appropriate so even if i don't manage to do it, at least i'll let you know how to do it on your own. The day before we should have desalted a 1/4 Kg pork ribs. (Some people say it's more tasty if you use stewing beef and chicken instead) Anyway, the next day we put them into a cauldron and add 3/4 Kg of potatoes, cut in squares, and a 1/4 Kg chickpeas. We cover it with water, doubleing the size of the ingredients with it, and put it on the fire. We salten it slightly and add a bit of bicarbonate to soften the chickpeas. While it begins to boil, we shoud've made a so called "sofrito"or "refrito" which is the base for an inmense ammount of spanish ...

Sad retrospective

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006
The night of the 23rd ended up with another case of gender violence in the town of "Sardina del Sur", in "Santa Lucia de Tirajana" when a 30 year old woman was stabbed by her husband 16 times, right in front of their two children. Yesterday, the mans car was found in the bottom of a cliff at the coastside in the town of Arinaga, in the same municipality. The man apparently tried to commit suicide but failed. Today, the dead body of this man was found laying at the Maspalomas beach, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. This kind of things give me the creeps as they raise my anger deeply. What the hell is wrong with these kind of people, it's insane. I don't get it, i just don't get how "civilized" people can even just think of doing things like that. Nothing can be going ...
