Rainy day

Friday, November 17th, 2006
Yesterday, almost the entire island got wet. For almost every municipality of the island, yesterday was the confirmation that the canarian winter is just over us. The expected rain cleaned the greenhouses from the dust left by the "calima", the dusty haze that sometimes comes over from the african continent. In Teror they had 25L/m², 45L/m² in Arucas, etc... but the major problems took place on the dangerous road to "La Aldea". As always, landslides and rock detachments happend due to the rainfall, causing mainly traffic problems and one accident, where a rock of about 100Kg fell on the back part of a car luckily causing no victims. This is for me the main reason, why the project of the motorway to La Aldea should be done as soon as possible. Every year there are the same problems when the rain falls, and one time it's gonna happen something really bad.

An Inconvenient Truth

Thursday, November 16th, 2006
A couple of hours ago, i watched a movie which really made me think. Rather than a movie it's more sort of a documentary film on global warming. It's called, as the title of this post says, 'An Inconvenient Truth'. It is presented and comented by former cadidate for us-presidency Al Gore. He talks about all facts an researches done by scientists throughout the years concerning global warming. It is very graphical since he uses a lot of pictures, animations, graphs, etc.. He actually didn't talk about Canary Islands, but as he presented some computer generated animations about what would happen if Greenland or Antartica started to melt more drastically, it made me think of what would happen to us here. Places like Manhattan, San Francisco, parts of northern Europe would be completely under water. Storms would appear in places where there've never been before as the results of water overheating due ...

The stream of arriving inmigrants continues.

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006
Last night, another boat with a yet unknown number of inmigrants arrived to our coasts once again. The canarian emergency service was alarmed by a few calls around 1:30 in the morning from the neighbours of "La Laja" in Las Palmas. The neighbours told they had seen several people walking and running away from the "La Laja" beach towards the interior. After the authorities were warned too the search begun in that area, ending with the detention of 7 adults of subsaharian origin. The search continues untill now with a now wider area including adjacent neighbourhoods of "La Laja". Though it's told in news that things are being done to avoid this problem, pacts are held with Morokkoand so on and that more coast guards are patroling the canarian waters, they're still arriving here. Something is still going wrong or things are not done well enough.

Canarian feeling in the UK.

Sunday, November 12th, 2006
By tomorrow, the 'Gregorian Room' of the famous store Harrods, will be promoting the canarian tomatoe in britain in its 2006-2007 edition. This event will try to strengthen the consumption of canarian tomatoes in the UK, which is, economically seen, a very important strategic point for the canarian food production sector. On tuesday another event will take place. This time, The Berkeley hotel will be the one to welcome a wine tasting of known canarian wines. "Los Bermejos", "Tierra de Frontos", "Arca de Vitis", "Carballo", "Viñatigo", "El Grifo", "Cumbres de Abona", "Llanovid", "Tamanca" and "Güimar" will be the ten wineries taking part in this act. Charlotte Hey, the editor of "The Drink Bussines", will asist to this event too and will discuss the potential of the canarian wines in the UK. I hope some more events like this are promoted by the spanish institue of foreign trade. This'll show some other qualities of ...

WOMAD strikes again.

Saturday, November 11th, 2006
Yesterday night, at the "Santa Catalina" park in Las Palmas the popular music and dance festival WOMAD started with its 12th edition. WOMAD, wich stands for "World Of Music, Arts & Dance" is a multicultural event with musical performances, workshop areas for adults and children and walkabout artists. The event will be this entire weekend (10th-12th) featuring performers such as: Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings ( United States ), Soul Jazz Sound System ( United Kingdom ), Toumani Diabaté & Symmetric Orchestra ( Mali ), Tamgo ( Canary Islands ), Sam Tshabalala ( South Africa ) and many more. Though i won't be able to go this year, i'd deffinitely recomend you this event. I've been there several other years and it's and experience you shouldn't miss if you're on the island.
